Discover the many benefits of prenatal yoga!

Many midwives and obstetricians recommend yoga for pregnancy because they notice a difference in how  prenatal yoga women cope with labour and birth. Whether you are intending to give birth at the Birth Centre, home or hospital yoga is a great preparation for body, mind and spirit and will equip you with valuable labour skills to help you have a positive and empowered birth experience.

The classes include:

GENTLE STRETCHES and SPECIFIC YOGA POSTURES to prepare your body for using effective birth positions shown to make labour shorter, less painful and reduce the chances of medical intervention.
PRACTISE OF LABOUR SKILLS – regularly using these skills during class makes them second nature when you are in labour, the main ones are using the breath consciously, moving the body to help your baby move through your pelvis and reduce pain, making sounds to relieve tension and pain and being comfortable in ACTIVE BIRTH positions  facilitate the birth process
STRENGTHENING postures to help you manage labour and be in helpful upright positions
RELAXATION – a vitally important practice to reduce and relieve tension not only during pregnancy but also to use the techniques during labour to allow birth hormones to flow more easily
VISUALISATION – to use during pregnancy and labour
IDEAS TO REDUCE PREGNANCY DISCOMFORTS – such as back pain, sciatica, carpal tunnel syndrome.  Referrals to appropriate health professionals are also provided
SIMPLE MEDITATION which can be used during pregnancy and after your baby is born to help you to remain more calm and relaxed when faced with life’s challenges
WAYS TO POSITION YOUR BABY WELL- during the last 6 weeks there are postures and movements which can help your baby move into an optimal birth position which can very positively influence labour outcomes
DISCUSSION on aspects of birth – beliefs, cultural attitudes, making an informed choice, natural induction, how your pelvis works for birth and many other varied topics
SHARING with other women during the circle times and the chance to make new friends.

Testimonials

“I had a very short 4 hour labour which was easy to manage with some of the strategies we learnt with you”  S.F

These pre-natal and post-natal yoga classes encompass so much more than just the yoga itself. In addition to physical energy and strength, I have discovered a support network, an excellent source of information and reading material, friendships and a positive environment that inspires women to confidently birth and parent their children in their own way.

A.M.

I just wanted to tell you how invaluable the techniques we learnt about in class were during the birthing process. I was able to use many of the active birth positions and found these really helped with the first stage of labour.

Julia’s class aims to celebrate pregnancy but also highlights how important preparing your body and mind for birth is. I would highly recommend this class to any pregnant woman who wants to find calm in her pregnancy and in her labour.

The deep relaxation techniques and some of the stretches and strengthening exercises I learnt during the classes I still use regularly and will continue to use lifelong. I especially loved the partner’s night as my husband found the class to be very informative and it was great that I got lots of massages at home after that. Sally – osteopath

“Thanks for providing such a great class to first time mums like me.  If it hadn’t been for the yoga I would have entered the birth scared and freaked out!”  G.M
